Guanajuato positioned as the fifth most visited state in Mexico: SECTUR

“Guanajuato was the fifth most visited state in Mexico during the current six-year term”, said Federal Tourism Secretary Enrique de la Madrid Cordero.

In a statement, in the framework of the Second National Congress of Treasures of Mexico, De la Madrid congratulated Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez, and the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato, Fernando Olivera Rocha, for the outstanding work he has done in the field of tourism during the current administration.

This appointment was achieved in 2017 when Guanajuato received 5,431,764 tourists who sleep in a hotel, 14.9 percent growth, compared to 2016, the figure registered was 4,727,198 tourists.

Guanajuato is in the top five nationwide, along with Quintana Roo, Mexico City, Jalisco and Guerrero, and above Puebla, Veracruz, Chihuahua, Chiapas and Sinaloa.

The Secretary of Tourism of the state of Guanajuato registered outstanding numbers from January to July this year, with 18 million visitors generating an economic benefit of 50.2 billion pesos (2.7 billion USD), a figure that shows a positive variation of 7 %, in comparison with the same period last year.

During these seven months, the state also received 3,348,446 tourists, representing an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2017, with an average hotel occupancy of 45%.

Only in the month of July the state has received 563,658 foreign tourists and more than 3 million national tourists, showing positive variation of five percent in both figures and compared with the previous year.

In this month the most visited municipalities of the state by tourists were:

  • León, with more than 165,000 visits;
  • Guanajuato, with more than 124,000;
  • Celaya, with more than 59,000 visits;
  • San Miguel de Allende, with more than 56,000;
  • Silao and Irapuato, with more than 44,000 visits;
  • Salamanca, with more than 22,000 visits; and
  • Dolores Hidalgo with more than 14,000 visits.

In air connectivity, the Bajío International Airport registered 224,700 passengers in July, of which 155,000 are national and 69,700 international.

Regarding employment in the tourism industry, 195 thousand people are employed in this area in the state of Guanajuato, a figure that represents an increase of 19%, that is, 30,761 people more employed than in the same quarter of the previous year.

For the number of people employed in the activity of Temporary Housing Services and Food and Beverage Preparation, the state of Guanajuato ranks fifth in the National Ranking.
