Amealco, Queretaro is the place where the Otomí dolls known as “Marías” were created.

And now Amealco, is also the new Magic Town of the state of Querétaro, offering the possibility to enjoy arts and crats, textiles, colonial architecture and ecotourism, as well as gastronomy featuring a wide variety of typical dishes of the region.

The secretary of economic development and municipal tourism, Víctor Ruiz Arteaga, indicated that the municipality, located 50 minutes away from the state capital, is famous for Amealco’s handmade dolls, which are elaborated by indigenous Otomí communities in around 500 workshops.

The official explained that some of these spaces located mostly in the towns of San Idelfonso Tultepec and Santiago Mexquititlán, provide visitors with the chance to take a tour, and learn about the creation of these iconic dolls named a few months ago as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Queretaro.

“These dolls are a recognition for Queretaro and for the whole country of Mexico, 100 thousand dolls are manufactured every month in the 500 workshops located in Amealco and other towns in Queretaro,” he said.

Ruiz Arteaga also recalled that Amealco boasts the Municipal Museum “Ricardo Pozas Arciniega”, which houses the Museum of Artisan Doll and its collection of more than 450 handmade dolls from all states of the country and other parts of the world.

He added that for those interested in learning how to make these endearing objects, on Saturdays the museum has workshops where the Otomi indigenous artisans show visitors the techniques to elaborate the dolls.
