A gastronomic weekend in San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a small town (and Cultural Heritage), flirtatious, clean and colorful, as if it’s taken from a story by the Brothers Grimm. It belongs to the state of Guanajuato and takes only a three hour drive from Mexico City, a perfect excuse to visit on a weekend.

Very close to the main square, on Relox street (#17) is Los Milagros Mexican Cuisine, where margaritas and molcajetes are exquisite and there is always live music. Of course, your audience is eminently American.

An original proposal is Mexifran (Zacateros #26), with dishes from Mexican court such as the rich Aztec soup with epazote or chile ancho stuffed with panela cheese sauce, huitlacoche, and other French style dishes like the mythical Onion soup au gratin with Emmental , a vegetarian ratatouille or beef bourguignon. The likeable Italian maitre d’ is part of the charm of the place, open and decorated in tropical woods.

Seafood and rice dishes are the specialty of El Pescau (Jesus #21), one of the most frequented establishments in downtown. Their shrimp, octopus and scallops are excellent. Negrito Inarritu, a kind of risotto with shrimp, octopus and squid ink and pepitos (flank steak, shrimp or smoked salmon) are also highly recommended.

Could you imagine that you were going to eat authentic cuisine of New Orleans in San Miguel de Allende? Hank’s (Miguel Hidalgo #12) represents one of the tastiest culinary offerings, with Cajun specialties like jambalaya (rice, seafood and sausage), BBQ ribs or the famous clam chowder (soup with bread espesita and clams), with good jazz background.

You need a different plan? Get away a few kilometers and enjoy a day “Sideways”. Just 35 kilometers from San Miguel de Allende, on the road to Dolores Hidalgo (+52 415 152 6060), the Earth Cradle cellar invites you to discover how new wines are made and tasted in Mexico. If you want to stay and eat in the cellar, you just have to say, and if you go in late August, you can not miss the Harvest Festival.
