Same sex marriages are now legal in the neighboring state of Michoacán

As of Wednesday May 17, 2016, gay marriages are now legal in the neighboring state of Michoacán.

The state congress derogated procreation as an end of marriage, approved amendments to the State Family Code and passed the initiative of making same-sex marriages legal in Michoacan.

In ordinary session, the reforms were approved with 27 votes in favor, 8 abstentions from PAN legislators, and zero votes against.

Arguments presented by legislators of Michoacán to approve the initiative included the declaration of the Supreme Court ruling marriages based on procreation as unconstitutional, and President Enrique Peña Nieto’s commitment to grant this right throughout the country.
