Impeccable service and the feeling of absolute luxury are some of the reasons why a hotel can belong to Tesoros de Mexico (Treasures of Mexico), a program operated by the Federal Ministry of Tourism and created in 2000, with the aim of promoting excellence and gathering the best hotels and restaurants.

Today 129 properties in 13 states have attained the certification, said Dora Maria Castro, Director of Tourism Certification for the Tourism Ministry.

Treasures of Mexico is a benchmark in premium experiences that qualify on the basis of the historical value, quality of facilities and services, among other things. Meet two of these accommodations in the city of Guanajuato:

Edelmira
About 200 years ago, the mansion that houses the hotel, in the historic center of Guanajuato, offered accommodations to the elite of the time. It is said that Benito Juarez and Porfirio Diaz slept between its stone walls and green quarry.

Much of the original structure was restored. The use of green is constant, alluding to the quarry. Edelmira receives no children and the atmosphere of the spa, pool and jacuzzi are ideal for couples.

The restaurant specializes in Mexican dishes. The most acclaimed are the typical enchiladas in Guanajuato.

The concierge Luis Rocha recommends: devote one day to museums, particularly the Museo Casa Diego Rivera and Alhóndiga. Then you have to go eat at La Trattoria, which fuses Italian dishes with Mexican flair.

Villa Maria Cristina
This hotel features stunning views on the terrace of each room and luxury. The property consists of four connected houses, two of which are cataloged by INAH.

It is located on the Paseo de la Presa. In the late nineteenth century it was a neighborhood for the upper class. The interior design is faithful to the neoclassical French concept. Iron columns, walls, lithographs and French furniture predominate.

All rooms have hardwood floors of oak and a marble covered bathroom. Natalia suite is one of the best, it offers a direct view of the Cerro de la Bufa. It has it’s own cinema with Netflix.

It’s restaurant Colombaia specializes in grilled meats and pizzas, while national dishes are served in Teresita. Aguachile is the star. It is 20 minutes from downtown.

Here are some of the requirements to be met by a hotel of excellence:
1. Being in a historic area or culturally important to Mexico. You can have a high value landscape.
2. Have at least two years working as accommodation.
3. Have a consistent proposal: what kind of travelers and tourism are sought.
4. Have the distinctive H (food handling), M (quality of tourism businesses) and Point Clean (hygiene).
5. It must demonstrate responsibility to the environment.
Applicants must meet 80% of these, to qualify and be eligible for an inspection.
