High-speed passenger rail line could link San Antonio to Monterrey

According to News4SanAntonio the first international passenger train between the U.S. and Mexico could become reality right here in south Texas.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says we’re closer than ever to seeing a high-speed passenger rail line that links San Antonio to Monterrey.

He’s been pushing for this project since 2008.

He calls it an economic game-changer, shrinking a commute that many already make from five hours down to two.

“If you talk to Sea World, Fiesta Texas, they love the idea because you’ve got millions of individuals from Monterrey who are already spending money at La Cantera,” said Cuellar. “They’re already spending a lot of money here.”

The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is also a strong supporter of the plan.

“Economists around the world are saying the area between Monterrey/Saltillo and San Antonio/Austin is the biggest economic generator that will happen over the next 20 years in the world,” said Ramiro Cavazos.

Cuellar says private money would pay for most of the project, but he wouldn’t reveal a price tag. Meantime, reports show officials in Mexico believe the cost for their side of the border will be about one-point-five billion dollars.
