At least nine Mexican companies from the pig-farming, transport, construction, and services sectors are operating in Havana, but another 26 more wait for the announcement of the Cuban Government to begin working in the island before September, said Luis Cabrera Cuarón, ProMexico ambassador and commercial counselor in Cuba.
Currently, the National Foreign Trade Bank (Bancomext) has resources of $27 million dollars to fund Mexican entrepreneurs wishing to do business with the island government.
The representative of ProMexico explained during the First Forum of Touristic Business held in Yucatán, that the first foreign company approved to enter Cuba in the new opening was a Mexican one, dedicated to the production of meat, the second, dedicated to paint manufacturing.
He said that currently 26 Mexican companies are at the stage of awaiting approval to enter the island; standing out are those of personal care, food and beverages, renewable energy, and tourism.
“It’s a wide range of companies knocking on the doors of the Cuban Market, looking for opportunities not only in investment projects, but also in increasing exports,” he said.
Secretary of Tourism, Enrique de la Madrid, stressed that the $27 million dollars will finance the Mexican exporters to send their products to Cuba.
“These funds are a powerful instrument that the Mexican Government will analyze in order to expand, since it becomes clear that the strong payment source is tourism, and there’s a clear growth in this sector,” he said.
