On Tuesday July 19, during an exclusive interview with Bloomberg TV in New York City, published by El Financiero, the mayor of SMA, Ricardo Villareal said that San Miguel de Allende is considered Cultural Heritage, that approximately 1.3 million visitors are expected for the rest of the year, and tourism infrastructure investments of around 500 million dollars as well as other industrial projects will boost SMA’s economy in an unprecedented way.
San Miguel de Allende has received several awards in recent years, such as the best destination in the world by the prestigious magazine Condé Nast Traveler and recently the publication Travel & Leisure named SMA the best city in Latin America and third in the world. But, how does this benefit San Miguel?
This kind of recognition by several prestigious magazines has a positive impact on people who had never heard of San Miguel de Allende, as result the number of tourists grows signficantly every year.
In fact, the city had a growth of 21 percent in 2015, and 30 percent so far this year, which helps to generate more jobs and economic development. San Miguel has been going in right direction for many decades.
Mexico is a large country with many extraordinary places, and San Miguel de Allende is the “crown jewel” located in the heart of Mexico.
The city was founded in 1560; and it boasts plenty of art, history, culture, gastronomy and beautiful architecture, it has been named World Heritage by UNESCO. It is also a very cosmopolitan place, with more than 14 thousand residents from over 60 different countries.
In addition, San Miguel has attracted other kind of visitors, especially after the construction of the convention center. We are now receiving important investments, new hotels and restaurants, new spaces for conventions, resulting in a stronger infrastructure as a convention tourist destination, with several national and international conferences every week.
The state of Guanajuato’ s economy has grown about 7 percent in recent years, with an investment of more than 7.8 billion USD in just three years, and San Miguel is not the exception. Today, we have a very important industrial park where many manufacturing international firms are establishing their plants, with a high labor capacity.
This year, we are expecting 1.3 million tourists, which will result in an unprecedented economic spill of about one billion USD.
But the main challenge is to provide similar living conditions to all residents of San Miguel. Achieving a “virtuous circle” with public and recreational spaces, good quality education, health services and social development for all the people of San Miguel de Allende.
