SMA Quilters Create Art Quilt to Benefit Biblioteca

“Books of Knowledge,” an award-winning art quilt designed and stitched by the SMA Quilters, is currently on display at Café MuRo in conjunction with their group show entitled “Small Works.”  A silent auction for the 33” x 50” wallhanging is being held during the month of July with all proceeds to be donated to the Biblioteca, San Miguel’s library.  In addition, thanks to the generosity of Café MuRo, a portion of the sales from the group’s other works in the show will also be donated to the library.

The bookcase quilt is the latest collaborative effort of the quilting group who regularly donate their time and creative endeavors to San Miguel’s charitable organizations.  Nine members created the ten blocks in this piece . . . the only direction given to each quilter was that each “shelf” of the bookcase must contain “books” and be stitched onto the same background fabric.  The result is their whimsical take on something found in many homes and libraries – a bookcase full of treasured books and accessories.

“Books of Knowledge” was displayed at the recent Festival de Quilts de Verano en El Bajio at the Poliforum in Leon where it was awarded First Place Viewers Choice.  The festival was sponsored by the national group, Quilters de Mexico.

The choice of La Biblioteca de San Miguel Allende A.C. as the recipient of this art quilt fundraiser was an obvious choice.  It is the group’s hope that the public will help them help the library by providing much-needed funds to continue being the wonderful resource that it’s been for over fifty years!  Bids are currently being accepted at Café MuRo.  The winner will be announced on July 31.
