300 federal police agents to strengthen Guanajuato’s security

“The Federal government sent 300 federal police agents to Guanajuato to strengthen the security in that state, in order to restore the peace and tranquility”, announced the Interior Minister, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong.

At a press conference in León Guanajuato, the federal official agreed with Governor Miguel Angel Marquez Marquez and members of the “Guanajuato” State Coordination Group to continue working on “joint actions” with other states in Central Mexico to reduce the crime rates.

Additionally, Milenio media group, published on August 3 that after 10 years, Guanajuato went from being one of safest states to occupy sixth place in homicides at national level.

In contrast, the number of municipal and state police agents has dropped 18 percent in only five years.

The murders in Guanajuato have increased from 242 in 2006 to 879 in 2015, while just in the first half of this year, the state has reached 441 already.

According to authorities and citizen organizations, the state has been the scene of disputes between criminal groups, such as the cartel “Jalisco Nueva Generación”, “Los Zetas” and “La Union” (composed of members of disembered cartels “Los Caballeros Templarios” and “la Familia Michoacana”), due to the fact that Guanajuato is geographically located right next to high crime rate states such as Michoacán to the south, and Jalisco to the west.
