LEON, Gto. – Director of Hospitality and Tourism, Gloria Magaly Cano de la Fuente, declared that the Guanajuato International Airport (AIG) faces serious problems in terms of delayed flights and infrastructure that have resulted in a negative economic impact for the business sector in the state industrial capital, León and other parts of the state.

“There are issues regarding infrastructure, services, transportation system and overall we note that the airport is not growing at the same pace as the dynamic industrial sector of Guanajuato, and therefore, it is not fulfilling the expectations of this demanding business community.

Cano de la Fuente said that many business travelers and tourists had complained about having to stay at the airport for hours due to delays, and this is a very sensitive issue, since most of these passengers are traveling to León or other cities for business purposes and they are wasting valuable time.

Also, Federal Deputy Miguel Ángel Salim Alle, declared that the suspension of the Bajio International Airport concession to GAP (Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, S.A.B. de C.V.) has been approved by the Mexican Congress and will submitted the next month.

The deputy said: “The concessionaires received an airport 18 years ago. After all those years the airport has the same parking lot, same buildings with minimal improvements and the group is not fulfilling the commitments”.

“They have an investment program, which must be obeyed”, declared Salim Alle.

“In 2015, they planned an investment program of 73 million pesos (3.8 million USD) to develop in security, infrastructure, and new areas (VIP lounge and commercial platform); while in 2016 the investment program has been calculated around 110 million pesos (5.7 million USD).”

“But Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) has not met these goals and programs”, concluded the Deputy.

As reported on the San Miguel Times, PROFECO’s (Consumer’s Federal Prosecution Office) module located at Guanajuato International Airport, received more than 60 complaints from otherwise-minded users, because several flights were delayed or cancelled during the months of July and August.
