Heavy rains cause damage and chaos in León, Guanajuato

LEÓN, GTO.- On August 8, heavy rains caused significant damage to roads, especially in the southern part of the city, dozens of homes, stores and offices were totally flooded and labor activities had to be suspended in different sectors of this muncipality.

Municipal Civil Protection reported that at 03:30 pm, the highest intensity of rain was registered, according to South-West and “Explora” meteorology stations, with precipitation of 52 to 56 millimeters of water per hour.

38 homes and businesses were reported flooded in different parts of the city, and a total of 42 accidents were registered. A tree fell at Mariano Escobedo and Bach Avenue, which hit the road.

In “La Mora” community, at the exit to San Francisco del Rincón, several families had to evacuate their homes.

An underpass on Boulevard “Hermanos Aldama” was also flooded, causing a big traffic jam that affected the area.

Classes were suspended at UNAM Campus of Leon, and summer activities at some sport centers were also cancelled.

On social networks, Municipal Civil Protection reported that intense rainining is forecasted for the coming days due to tropical storm Javier that is hitting the Mexican Pacific coast.

“We have currently 696 municipal and state agents, 280 security vehicles, working to take care of any emergency” León’s Municipal Civil Protection published in its Twitter account.

The municipality of León announced that the Central Emergency number 066 is available to attend any calls from the citizenship.
