The state of Guanajuato has consolidated in the last 3 years as an automotive hub in Mexico. Now, the government aims to attract investments in the aeronautical sector with the construction of a new specialized industrial park in Silao, Guanajuato; in a total area of 80 hectares within the “Guanajuato Inner Port” (Guanajuato Puerto Interior).
This industrial park named “Sky Plus Aerospace Park” will have capacity to accommodate 34 companies dedicated to the manufacture of parts and components, as well as handling aircraft or air cargo maintenance; with an investment of 600 million pesos (31.2 million USD), according to information provided by the state governor, Miguel Marquez Marquez and the head of this project, Carlos Puente.
The construction process will begin in the second week of October 2016, and developers look forward to opening in the first half of 2017.
Marquez Marquez explained that although some of the investors are yet to be confirmed, one of the firms that will be installed in Sky Plus Park, is a drone company.
In that sense, Carlos Puente said: “We want to attract Tier-1 companies (Turbine, Fuselages or Landing train manufacturers) as an anchor to engage other businesses”.
The Sky Plus Park offers the following attractions:
- A bonded warehouse, which will facilitate air-cargo transportation
- The boundary with the Bajio International Airport (AIG)
- Railroad and highway infrastructure
- Qualified personnel within Inner Port of Guanajuato (GPI). This will be possible due to the fact that the “Interdisciplinary Professional Unit of Engineering faculty of Guanajuato University” (Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería campus Guanajuato – UPIIG) features an Aeronautical Engineering degree.
According to the Mexican Federation of Aerospace Industry (Federación Mexicana de la Industria Aeroespacial “Femia”), the state of Querétaro leads in aeronautic industry foreign direct investment, while Chihuahua the largest number of jobs in this sector, and Baja California is the Mexican state with the largest number of companies dedicated to this industry.
