Guanajuato and San Miguel expect more than 250 thousand visitors during “Independence Holidays”

GUANAJUATO, Gto. – The Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) expects the arrival of over 250 thousand visitors during the upcoming Independence holidays with the purpose to attend the “Cry of Dolores” (Grito de Dolores), with an economic impact of 867 million pesos (45 million USD) for the whole state.

The head of the state Secretariat, Fernando Olivera Rocha reported that for this long weekend, Guanajuato capital will be one of the tourist destinations where the hotel occupancy will be breaking new records, a this moment it already reports 80 percent of reservations, along with San Miguel de Allende.

Meanwhile, hotels in the town of Dolores Hidalgo (cradle of the Mexican Independence), are sold out for the weekend.

“In the city of Guanajuato, we expect at least 30 thousand visitors and an economic impact of more than 90 billion pesos from September 15 to 18.” declared Oliver Rocha.

The state secretary said that this year the “Independence holidays” will bring a greater economic spill to Guanajuato, and will exceed last year’s results.”

He also ensured that the recent incidents registered in San Miguel de Allende, which is considered one of the most attractive cities in Mexico and World Heritage, will not affect tourism activity in the state.

Olivera Rocha declared that absolutely no cancellations have been made in Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo or San Miguel de Allende, where tourism is really important, during these celebrations.

He continued explaining that the government is working across the state to guarantee the safety of all tourists, and authorities are constantly alert of any unsual situations during the Independence holidays.

“Our Governor Miguel Márquez is personally supervising Federal, State and Muncipal law enforcement agencies, which will be implementing security operations for the safety of all citizens.”

“And the Tourism Secretariat will be watching closely in order to avoid any abuse or mistreatment by tourism services providers, aiming to guarantee an excellent travel experience.”

Tourism Observatories

The State Officer headed the opening ceremony of the fourth meeting of Tourism Observatories held in the state capital, with the participation of 20 Mexican states and 4 countries.

State Tourism Secretary, Fernando Olivera Rocha said the goal is to work at national and international level, in the analysis of the data that these observatories produce: measurements, results, statistics, behaviors and tourism trends, among other parameters.

He concluded stating that: “Guanajuato is a pioneer in this field, for that reason we have organized here the four observatories meetings. Guanajuato is the only observatory in America, which is part of the network of sustainable tourism observatories of the World Tourism Organization”.
