Guanajuato Gto. – At least 38 million motor vehicles are registered across 31 states and Mexico City, being the state of Mexico the first place in traffic volume, reaching 5.1 million, while Guanajuato features 1.6 million vehicles, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía INEGI).
Statistics of Motor Registered Vehicles in Circulation (Estadísticas de Vehículos de Motor Registrados en Circulación VMRC) of 2014 show that Mexico City occupied the second place in number of vehicles in the country with 4.7 million, then came Jalisco with 3.1 million motor vehicles, while Guanajuato was seventh with 1.6 million.
Meanwhile, INEGI stated that the states that feature less figures, with an average of 283,000 and 266,000 units are Colima and Campeche, in a publication issued for the “World Car-Free Day”, which will be held the next Thursday, September 22.
From 2009 to 2014, the national vehicle fleet grew by 23.1 percent, from 30.8 million to 38.0 million units, highlighting an 89.5 percent growth in the volume of motorcycles, which shows a significant increase in the use of these kind of motor vehicles nationwide.
Meanwhile, cars featured a 24.5 percent growth; cargo vehicles 11.6 percent, and passenger vehicles 2.7 percent.
On the other hand, INEGI mentions that according to the results of the Intercensal Survey (Encuesta Intercensal) 2015, 43.5 percent of the 31,924,863 Mexican households have at least one car per family.
The states with the highest percentages of households with vehicles are Baja California Sur with 66.5 percent; Baja California with 65.3 percent, and Chihuahua with 63.9 percent. On the contrary, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas had the lowest rates with 21.8, 21.4 and 19.5 percent, respectively.
In this category Guanajuato is number 16, with 46.1 percent, therefore, 4 out of every 10 households have a car or a truck.
