Heavy rainfalls caused serious damages across the state of Guanajuato

Four municipalities in Guanajuato were declared “state of emergency” by The National Coordination of Civil Protection of the Ministry of the Interior (Secretaría de Gobernación) on Thursday, September 1st.

In the last days, the muncipalities of Cuerámaro, Manuel Doblado, Abasolo and Pénjamo have been battered by heavy rains and river floodings.

Due to this situation, the state government requested the activiation of the Fund for Emergency Response (Fonden – Fondo para la Atención de Emergencias), in order to support the affected population with shelter, food, drinking water  and health services”.

On Saturday August 27, the Guanajuato state government made a formal request to get help for these 4 municipalities, where homes, schools, roads, highways, water sewage systems, drains and fields were seriously damaged.

The Executive Coordination of Civil Protection requested state authorities a report of the damage in order to provide the necessary resources to aid these communities.

During the period from August 1 to 25, a rainfall of 205 mm was recorded in Guanajuato, while only 98 mm were recorded in the same period of 2015.

According to state authorities, a considerable increase in dam levels has resulted of the heavy rainfall, exceeding the maximum water storage level. Therefore, water is poured into the Rio Turbio, which has overflowed in several points along these 4 municipalities.
