Ex-Gov. Duarte bought luxury boat through a front man

Information given by a front man for fugitive Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte has revealed the purchase in 2011 of a pleasure boat for USD$790,000, a vessel the governor felt was necessary for the dignity of his office.

The information was given by Alfonso Ortega, the lawyer who has admitted to being a prestanombre, or front man, for Duarte, who is under investigation for organized crime, money laundering, tax evasion and more.

Ortega told the Attorney General’s office that he had created a company in the United States, Alpargata Marine Venture Score, to purchase the Italian-built Aquariva Super.

He said Duarte instructed lawyer José Juan Janeiro, identified as one of the governor’s most senior operatives, to make the payment for the boat.

In Duarte’s words, Janeiro was responsible for managing “his resources,” Ortega said in his declaration before authorities.

On Friday Oct. 21 federal investigators searched five houses in Mexico City linked to Duarte and others.

Duarte resigned as governor earlier this month to face charges of corruption in office, but his whereabouts are unknown.
