Health training at local hospitals to reduce the risk of maternal and perinatal death

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, GTO.- The “Helping babies breathe” course (Ayudando a los Bebés a Respirar) started Monday, October 24 at several hospitals in the state of Guanajuato. This program is carried out by the Guanajuato’s Health Secretariat (SSG –  Secretaría de Salud de Guanajuato).

The State Health Secretary, Francisco Ignacio Ortiz Aldana said: “The goal of this course is to reduce the risk of maternal and perinatal death in Guanajuato. This kind of educational training must endure in our state”.

Ortiz Aldana stated: “the neonatal resuscitation is strengthened through sustainable programs of essential neonatal care.”

Neonatal and advanced neonatal resuscitation manuals  as well as resuscitation mannequins were delivered by the Health Secretariat to different hospitals as part of the didactic material necessary for this course.

Specialized equipment was also delivered to nursing and medical staff at “Hospital General de León“, “Hospital Materno Infantil de León” and “Hospital General de Pénjamo“.

Besides, the training course for maternal care “Helping Mothers Survive” will take place at the San Miguel de Allende General Hospital.

The main goal of this training is to teach the necessary techniques to stop and prevent postpartum hemorrhage, since bleeding after childbirth is the leading cause of maternal deaths.

This training will enhance the skills needed to prevent, identify and treat postpartum hemorrhage. In the same way, personnel is instructed on how to monitor the signs that indicate changes in the conditions of mothers and babies.

“So, the state government of Guanajuato is working in the implementation of these important training programs, using simulating equipment provided to maternity hospitals by the National Institute of Perinatology (Instituto Nacional de Perinatología); in collaboration with the “On time-screening State Center” (Centro Estatal de Tamizaje Oportuno CETO), which is committed to the proper assessment and specific control on the first level of care using especially advanced technology to define and prevent mortality averages.
