“La Calaca” Festival kicks off today!

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (October 2016) – The fifth annual festival “La Calaca” will take place from October 28 to November 2, 2016.

“La Calaca” is an arts and culture poular festival in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato; which is recognized internationally and is integrated into the traditional “Day of the Dead” celebrations.

This year, “La Calaca” offers six days of art, performances, religious processions, workshops, conferences and festivals that honor, promote and explore the artistic and cultural traditions that surround death and its relationship to life.

Most events will take place at the Santa Maria del Obraje Cultural Center, which features an auditorium, an outdoor performance area, an amphitheater and a chapel.

Some events that will be part of the festival are:

Eternal Love, a tribute to deceased artists and Mexican icons Juan Gabriel and Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Dead and Monarcas – Night Gala, an extravagant costume party that will feature international DJs.

DeadTalks, a creative conference room, workshops, art and panels with a selection of short films curated by the International Film Festival of Guanajuato (GIFF);

Pool Party one day in hot springs with the participation of German musicians Feathered Sun;

Wanderer Ritual feast with the participation of Chilean band Slaughter and DJ Look Katter Mukke Recording Label, from Berlin, Germany.

Several other “Day of the Dead” celebrations will be happening simultaneously throughout the city.

Visitors can attend conferences, workshops, craft markets, processions with allegorical clothing and tours of traditional altars and cemeteries, as well as artistic performances and exhibitions organized by local artists, NGOs, non-profit and cultural institutions.
