“Pan de Muerto” a billion-peso industry in Mexico

The sale of “Pan de Muerto” from October 30 to 2 November, will leave an economic income of at least two billion pesos (one hundred million USD) nationwide.

The National Chamber of the Bread Industry (Cámara Nacional de la Industria Panificadora: Canainpa) is expecting 30 million pieces of “Pan de Muerto” to be marketed only during those dates.

These estimates are conservative though; as there are bakeries all over the country that already started selling “Pan de Muerto” weeks ago.

For the celebration of Day of the Dead, on 1 and 2 November in Mexico City, 55 thousand pieces of  “Pan de Muerto” will be distributed at the “Zócalo”, startng at 12 noon, absolutely for free, to everyone visiting the monumental offering there (altar monumental).

The bread industry in Mexico has a market value of 34 billion pesos, is the third industry that generates a largest number of jobs, more than two million in the nearly 55 000 bakeries across the country.
