In the 29th edition of the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards, more than 300,000 readers weighed in on their favourite destinations, hotels, cruises, airlines and resorts — nearly twice as many as last year — to help editors compile lists of the best in world travel for 2016.
In that sense, Condé Nast Traveller Magazine published the list of the best cities around the world, in which Tokyo and Kyoto took the top spot, for the following reasons: neon-lit skyscrapers, temples, shrines and expansive forests. Likewise, readers said they were drawn to the city for its culinary offering as it boasts more Michelin stars than any other city.
On the other hand, San Miguel de Allende ranked on the 5th place, due the fact that many consider colonial-era San Miguel de Allende one of Mexico’s prettiest cities, and it’s no wonder. Here, you’ll find leafy courtyards, narrow cobblestone streets, and a historic town center from which the Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel’s pink towers rise high above the main plaza, “El Jardín”.
Located 165 miles northeast of Mexico City in the country’s hilly central highlands. Although San Miguel has no international airport, Queretaro’s Intercontinental Airport is just 40 miles east, and Guanajuato Intenational Airport is 54 miles west of SMA.
In 2008, UNESCO recognized San Miguel de Allende and neighboring Sanctuary of Jesus de Atotonilco as World Heritage of Humanity sites.
