Spanish tourism growth continues in Guanajuato

Spanish tourism has grown considerably in the last year throughout Guanajuato, Mexico.

According to the Guanajuato’s Secretary of Tourism, Fernando Olivera Rocha, the average of Spanish visitors grew almost 100 percent from 2012 to 2016, with a total of 70 thousand visitors during the last year.

On a press conference, Olivera Rocha explained: “In Spain, we have been working in an intense campaign, promoting tourism in the state of Guanajuato, and we will continue with diverse programs that have been proved successful, resulting in an increased number of visitors year by year since 2012”.

Olivera announced that: “From Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 January 2017, during the 37th Edition of the “Madrid International Tourism Fair” (Fitur – Feria Internacional de Turismo de Madrid), tourism state authorities will promote the “Punto Guanajuato” program, in order to advertise the natural, cultural and gastronomic richness of our state, aiming to trigger tourism activity”.

Olivera Rocha continued: “In Spain, 200 certified travel agents are now part of the “Agent GTO” program, with more than three thousand already registered in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America together”.

“For this edition of the “Madrid International Tourism Fair”, we will sign an agreement in order to establish a system of “Paradores of Spain” in Guanajuato. We are currently working directly with several Spanish Autonomous Communities, such as “Castilla y León”, “Galicia”, “Murcia”, “La Rioja” and “Extremadura”, through different tourism programs and gastronomy shows”, continued the Secretary.

“In fact, we are giving great promotion to the Guanajuato’s wine routes in La Rioja (a famous wine region in Europe), taking into consideration that the vineyards in our state now represent eight percent of the total wine production in all of México”.

“Air connectivity is something we will be promoting as well, the opening of new air routes from Cancun to the Bajio airport, as well as Iberia’s flight connection from Mexico City to Guanajuato”.

“The number of visitors from other countries, such as Colombia, Japan, United States and Canada has also increased significantly in the last four years”.

By 2017, Guanjuato’s tourism promotion strategies will also include France and Italy, since the direct flight from Rome to Mexico City was opened this year.
