USAID awards more than $65 million USD for new projects in Mexico
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City distributed the following news release on November 8, 2016.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recently awarded more than U.S. $65 million in awards for eleven new projects in Mexico.
Its largest award, of U.S. $24.8 million, was for the Mexico Low Emissions Development Activity (MLEDII). This is a five-year activity designed to help the government, civil society, private sector and academia develop the country’s overall capacity for low emissions development, including increasing the amount of renewable energy in the electricity grid.
USAID’s new Civil Society Activity, valued at U.S. $21.3 million, is a four-year activity that will support local civil society organizations working on crime prevention, criminal justice and human rights issues. In addition, multiple awards to international and Mexican organizations, totaling more than U.S. $9 million will help strengthen transparency and integrity in Government of Mexico institutions and the private sector.
Finally, a new loan guarantee mechanism will expand access to finance for small landholders who seek to develop sustainable land-use practices, which will result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
USAID partners with and supports Mexican efforts to improve citizen security, criminal justice, transparency, human rights and environmental sustainability.
