As part of the great religious tourism offer of the city of Celaya, Guanajuato, the Franciscan friars will transform the former convent of San Francisco into an outstanding religious art museum.
The convent features the “Chapel of Dolores”, a great collection of religious works of art and one of the most important Historical Archives of the Mexican Republic.
Friar Fray Flavio Chavez said that: “the former convent is a religious, cultural and social complex where thousands of people concentrate week after week”.
“Its architectural and historical beauty are truly transcendental, as this magnificient convent was built on the XVII Century. February 2, 1683 is the exact date when the first stone of this ancient building was placed, and the works concluded more than 45 years later, on December 7, 1728,” he contnued.
“Today, visitors can still witness the wealth and richness of this historical legacy, beginning with the architecture of the temple, which altars are churrigueresque and neoclassical styles, and were designed by architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras”, concluded Fray Flavio Chávez.
