25.2 million tourists visited Guanajuato during 2016: SECTUR

25.2 million tourists visited the state of Guanajuato during 2016, according to data from the department of ​​information and analysis of the State Secretariat of Tourism.

In a statement, the state administration reported that, the amount of visitors resulted in a significant economic impact of more than 83.8 billion pesos (49.9 million USD) and an average hotel occupancy of 47 percent, with a total of 3.5 million occupied rooms along the year.

The secretariat also pointed out that, there were significant increases in some of the main destinations compared with the same period in 2015, such as the city of Celaya, which received 535 thousand tourists, representing an increase of 16 percent, while Guanajuato registered an increase of 8 percent with 861 thousand tourists.

Other cities with where the number of tourists increased in 2016 are León, Salamanca, San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo.

81,614 people visited the archaeological areas of the state, and 554,941 tourists visited the museums in Guanajuato.

The tourism private sector invested around 2.2 billion pesos (110 million USD), providing jobs for a total of 161,839 people, in different tourism services (mostly food & beverage and accommodation).
