50 historical properties to be restored in León, Guanajuato

LEÓN, Gto- At least 50 historical buildings will be restored in the central part of downtown León, Guanajuato, through an intense program carried out by the Municipal Office of Urban Development, informed Teresita Gallardo Arroyo, head of the Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Gallardo Arroyo explained: “These restoration works will be done with the collaboration of the most specialized restorers and architecture graduates. First, the team will come up with an initial proposal for each building, and then a master plan will be developed and submitted before INAH’s “Board of Monuments”, for their approval”.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Office of Urban Development has carried out a meeting with the owners of these properties cataloged as National Heritage, to offer them help to obtain the necessary permissions granted by INAH.

“We are supporting the owners so they can intervene in these historic buildings rescue”, added Gallardo Arroyo.

“Many owners comment that, they do not remodel or restore their properties, due to INAH’s bureaucracy. That is why we are working on this matter, we will give them the necessary tools for a proper restoration project approved by INAH and the Historical Heritage Council.” the Federal officer said.

According to a data from Leon’s Municipal Office of Urban Development, there are currently 146 properties considered as Historical Heritage, in downtown León. However, ten of them are completely useless and others have been replaced with “modern” buildings.

After conducting a census, 25 buildings are severely damaged, especially in windows, portals or lintels, but remain standing and could be restored by specialists.
