On Thursday February 23, Mexican authorities announced that, Angel Maria Tellería Uriarte was detained in León, Guanajuato, due to his alleged participation in several terrorist attacks in Spain as an ETA member.
According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), the suspicious member of ETA (Basque separatist armed and terrorist group), is involved in several crimes that will be prescribed on March, such as the killing of a police officer in 1981. But Tellería Uriarte was finally detained in the state of Guanajuato on February, and he will have to face the Spanish justice system for that crime.
According to the red card issued by Interpol for his capture, the 60-year-old detainee will be extradited to Spain, where he is wanted for the crimes of “attempted murder and illegal weapons’ possession”.
The Facts
On June 16, 1981, Tellería Uriarte along with Jose Luis Ecicolaza Galán, another alleged member of ETA, hid in a property located in the downtown area of Zarauz (Basque region) Northern Spain, when they were surprised during a Police operation.
Ecicolaza Galán opened fire causing the death of police officer Maria Josefa Garcia Sánchez and minutes later they threw two grenades, and were able to fled the scene.
“The detainee was living illegally in Mexico since the 1980s, and the crimes for what was sought would prescribe this March,” said the statement from the PGR.
Tellería Uriarte was placed in custody, and the National Institute of Migration will hand him over to the corresponding Spanish law enforcement agency.
According to the Spanish press, the detainee known as “Antxoka” would have belonged to ETA’s “old school” Haizea command.
