Hotel occupancy average in San Miguel shows an increase of 56%

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Gto.- The San Miguel de Allende’s Tourism Council (Consejo Turístico) reported the activities carried out in 2016, and tourism sector results.

Federal, state and municipal authorities highlighted the increase in the average of hotel occupancy and the significant economic impact, through several activities carried out in the municipality.

State Secretary of Tourism Fernando Olivera Rocha; Mayor Ricardo Villarreal; federal deputy Veronica Agundis; and the Manager of the Tourism Council, Guillermo González attended the ceremony at “Instituto Allende”.

Guillermo González informed that, the increase in the average of the number of visitors represents 25%, while the hotel occupancy shows a significant 56% increase, with an economic impact of 27% above the previous year. In addition, there was an increase of 56% in hotel occupancy tax.

During 2016, 600 weddings were carried out in San Miguel Allende, other 32 events also took place in this peaceful town, and finally movies such as ‘The Immoral Life of the Ideal Couple’, ‘Un padre no tan padre‘ and the Mexican version of T.V. show  ‘Master Chef’ were recorded in San Miguel.

In this sense, San Miguel has been achieving a recognition at international level due to an intense campaign made on social networks by the municipal government.

Mayor Ricardo Villarreal concluded:  “7 out of 10 jobs in SMA depend on tourism. Therefore, the municipality needs to improve its mobility plan; in which we are already working to reduce the number of vehicles in the World-Heritage zone, downtown San Miguel.
