State and municipal authorities announce innovative street lighting project for SMA

On Saturday February 11, Fernando Olivera Rocha, Guanajuato’s Secretary of Tourism, had an important meeting with Mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Ricardo Villarreal García in order to release a street lighting project called “San Miguel de Allende shines”  (San Miguel de Allende: Brilla).

Through a statement, the municipal agency explained that, this project includes the change of street lights and the installation of high tech scenic lightning on eight historic buildings and some pedestrian boulevards.

In that sense, Ricardo Villareal, Mayor of San Miguel de Allende, said that “we will invest around 24 million pesos (1.1 million USD), provided by the National Fund for Culture and Arts (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las artes, FONCA) along with resources granted by the Federal Secretariat of Tourism, equivalent to 15 million pesos (730 thousand USD).

This street light project is designed under the worldwide program known as “Lighting planning“, which consists in developing an attractive and significant urban design, created through the use of lights. The plan has been already approved by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, INAH).

In this regard, Olivera Rocha supports these kinds of projects, and stressed that, “the municipality of San Miguel de Allende stands out for its social commitment about ecology conservation and preservation”.

“In a tourist destination like San Miguel, there is a constant activity that generates income, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; during day light hours visitors can enjoy the usual recreational and cultural activities throughout the city, and by night they will able to take advantage of other kind of affairs, they can chill out at restaurants and bars, enjoy world-class shows or take pleasure on the nocturnal scenery,” said Olivera Rocha.

Finally, the Tourism Secretary concluded: “San Miguel de Allende: Brilla” is a sustainable project, which will allow us to continue preserving our heritage, customs, traditions and public spaces, promoting a high-quality lifestyle for all residents and visitors.
