“The statistics you’ve read about Mexican immigration trends this century are misleading,” says Judith Gille, award-winning author of The View from Casa Chepitos: A Journey Beyond the Border, her memoir that includes a migrant’s story.
She will speak at Rotary on The U.S./Mexico Border: History, Migrations, and the Future of U.S. Immigration Policy Tuesday, February 14, at 12:30 p.m. at Hotel Mision, Salida a Queretaro 1.
The presentation will be free and in English.
Gille will cover the history of Texas settlement, the expansion of slavery, the Mexican-American War, and various border migrations. Her presentation will cover the California Gold Rush, the Mexican Revolution of 1910, the Bracero Program, Operation Wetback, the potential effects of removing all undocumented Mexicans from the US.
Most importantly, she will discuss what we can do in response to President Trump’s anti-immigrant policies and his recent executive actions.
Gille, who is often a guest speaker at women’s book groups, is a freelance writer about Mexican art, culture, immigration and other issues. Her articles, essays and opinion pieces have appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Dallas Morning News, the Florida Sun-Sentinel, The Seattle Times, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and in numerous magazines, online literary journals and anthologies.
Gille is the founder and owner of City People’s mercantile and garden stores in Seattle. She currently divides her time between Seattle and San Miguel.
