According to data from the General Directorate of Epidemiology, that belongs to the Ministry of Health, Guanajuato is fourth in maternal deaths nationwide.
The states that report the highest number of maternal deaths from January to March 2017 are: Chiapas (11), State of Mexico (10), Jalisco (9), Guanajuato (8), Baja California, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz (6) .
During 2016, Guanajuato was fourth with 38 maternal deaths, only surpassed by the State of Mexico (108), Chiapas (58), Puebla (44) and Veracruz (40). And the state was fifth on the national table in 2015.
According to the report from the Ministry of Health, the average number of maternal deaths for 2017 is one per week.
“The federative entities that show a higher Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) are: Campeche, Chiapas, Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Mexico, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sonora, and Tlaxcala “.
(The MMR is an average calculated from the rate of maternal deaths per 100,000 births).
According to World Health Organization, Maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.
“Most of these complications occur during gestation, and are preventable or treatable, others may manifest before pregnancy, especially if they are not treated as part of a health care treatment”.
Just a week ago, a pregnant 13-year-old girl died from complications while being treated at a hospital of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in the municipality of Irapuato, Guanajuato.
The child died due to complications (preeclampsia) suffered after childbirth, one of the main complications that provoke maternal deaths.
