Amazon looks to boost the textile, clothing, leather and footwear sector in Guanajuato

LEON, Guanajuato – Amazon, the largest virtual store worldwide, is already working on incorporating ten Guanajuato companies into its digital platform, in order to market their products through e-commerce in the United States and Canada, as well as Mexico.

“These companies are part of the leather-footwear-textile chain. Their production is focused on the Fashion Cluster of Guanajuato”, confirmed Carlos Alberto Rodríguez Martín del Campo, director of training and international certifications of the Coordinator for Promotion of Foreign Trade (Coordinadora de Fomento al Comercio Exterior, COFOCE) of Guanajuato.

“Due to this strategy carried out by Amazon, this firm will be incorporating more and more sectors in its digital platform. In this regard, “Moda Vestir”, another digital channel, will be launched by them, and afterwards Amazon probably will accept other sectors,” explained Carlos Alberto Rodríguez Martín del Campo.

This new strategy encourages the purchase of products from this chain and will involve more Guanajuato products on virtual platforms to be sold worldwide, with the support of Amazon, a pioneer in e-commerce that started operations in 1994 and arrived to Mexico in 2015.

The COFOCE official confirmed to MILENIO that a first meeting between several Guanajuato companies and Amazon personnel was held two weeks later. Likewise, the official announced that next week another workshop will carry out to detail how they will be working on strengthening collaboration ties with Amazon.

E-commerce in Mexico is one of the most booming marketing channels in recent years and presents a high potential for business, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The United States and China currently monopolize the Internet sales worldwide. Nevertheless, countries such as India, Indonesia and México are playing an important role in this matter.

According to the last investigation from the Mexican Internet Association (Asociación Mexicana de Internet, AMIPCI), sales in Mexico through e-commerce have increased from 24 million pesos ($1.2 million USD) in 2009 up to 257 million pesos ($12.8 million USD) in 2015, which means an exponential growing in the last years, offering excellent opportunities for exporting more products.
