I got a call from the Jovenes Adelante office the other day saying, “We are due to get another partial sponsorship soon! I’ll send you the info!” I was excited, and then more excited when I discovered that this potential donation will come as a result of a concert to benefit Jovenes Adelante by one of our students, Emmanuel Beltran, who is studying at Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
“I want to promote romantic classical piano music such as Chopin, Beethoven and Liszt’s waltzes, mazurkas, and more while benefiting Jovenes Adelante,” said Beltran, who is due to graduate next year and has been playing at Café Monet frequently over the years. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata will be featured at the concert, which will be Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. at Bellas Artes here, Hernandez Macias 75.
Tickets are on sale at Pasaje Allende, Local K, Mesones 81, Maru Moro Boutique, and will be on sale at Bellas Artes an hour before the event. Ticket prices are $200 and $250 pesos. Jovenes Adelante grants scholarships to local Mexican honors students who otherwise could not afford to attend university and break the cycles of historic economic disparity into which they were born. Jovenes Adelante has a goal of putting 25 students into university in the fall. Sponsorships cost about $4 USD/day over five years. Each scholarship comes with a laptop, a mentor, English tutoring, psychological counseling, life skills, and a graduate network. For these reasons, Jovenes Adelante has an 85-percent graduation rate, higher than in Mexico, the US, and Canada. Donations to Jovenes Adelante are deductible in the US, Mexico and Canada.
