1.5 million visitors to arrive in Guanajuato during Easter holidays

In the upcoming Easter holidays, Guanajuato’s authorities expect the arrival of 1.5 million visitors with a significant economic impact of $5.9 billion pesos ($315 million USD), which would mean an increase of 4% and 8%, respectively, compared to last year.

Through a statement, the General Directorate of Planning of the State’s Secretariat of Tourism (Secretaría de Turismo, Sectur) informed that they expect the arrival of 279,000 foreigners, out of a total of 1.5 million visitors, and estimate that the average hotel occupancy will reach 52%, meaning an increase of 4% compared to 2016.

They also expect that Guanajuato capital will receive 194,788 visitors, leaving an economic spill of $556 million pesos with an increase of 6% and 9% respectively. This figure represents an arrival of almost 68,000 tourists more in this year, generating a hotel occupancy of 64% with an increase of 6% compared to 2016.

In San Miguel de Allende, probably more than 107,000 visitors are expected to arrive in this holy week. That means an economic impact of more than $337.6 million pesos, an increase of 8% and 12% respectively in relation to the previous year. While about 35 thousand tourists are expected with a hotel occupancy of 64%, increasing by 8% the figure of the previous year.

In León, the hoteliers estimate that the occupancy will reach 57% with the arrival of more than 90,000 tourists, 4% more than in 2016, generating an economic spill of more than $1.4 million pesos, with 4% and 8% more than in 2016.

In Celaya, the tourism authorities expects 121,000 visitors and an economic outflow of more than $299 million pesos with an increase of 3% and 6% respectively compared to 2016; with a hotel occupancy of 43% with the arrival of more than 25 thousand tourists that represents an increase of 3%.

One of the Magical Towns in Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo, will receive an influx of more than 47,000 visitors and the generation of an economic spill of more than $67 million pesos with an increase of 5% and 8% respectively compared to 2016, as well as a Hotel occupancy of 39% with the arrival of 6,748 tourists; 5% more compared to last year.

The municipality of Irapuato expects the arrival of almost 182,000 visitors and an economic spill of more than $517 million pesos with an increase of 3% and 7% respectively compared to the previous year, as well as a hotel occupancy of 48%, meaning an increase of 3%.

In Salamanca, the government estimates an economic impact of more than $135 million pesos with the arrival of more than 56,000 visitors and an increase of 7% and 4% respectively. This year, the hotel occupancy will reach 38%, an increase of 4% compared to 2016.

On the other hand, Guanajuato received more than 25 million visitors in 2016, which generated a significant economic impact of $83 billion pesos, with an increase of 11% and 13% respectively compared to 2015, and a hotel occupancy of 47 %.

These figures mean a historical data in economic spillover that exceeded 9.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Guanajuato. With this, the tourism sector is considered as the second most important economic activity in the state, just below the Automotive Industry, surpassing Agriculture sectors, as well as the Leather-Footwear industry.
