First gay couple marries in Cortazar, Guanajuato

36-year-old Oswaldo Zendejas Vargas from Cortazar, Guanajuato and 26-year-old Mauricio González Méndez from San Miguel Allende filed an injunction in order to marry after a request for permission to marry was denied due to the fact that Guanajuato’s law doesn’t regulate this legal form of marriage.

Six months after the legal process was begun, the two young men consummated their marriage on Thursday March 30 in Cortazar’s Civil Registry office.

The couple arrived at the Civil Registry office at two o’clock in the afternoon. Afterwards Judge Rubén Baeza Zavala led the ceremony, with the presence of two witnesses and relatives.

After the ceremony, Oswaldo and Mauricio expressed their happiness for their marriage, which already has legal certainty.

“In my case, from a very young age, when I assumed my sexuality, I had the idea, the intention, the dream, and the illusion to get married someday,” Oswaldo said.

He explained that he “believes that he will be able to support him, it doesn’t mean that he will assume a role. This will be possible if there is love between them…With this marriage, we can receive the social security, a pension, an inheritance, a security.”

The spouses hope their case will set a precedent for more LGBTTTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Transsexual and Intersex) couples to marry.

“Actually we feel very happy. As a community we have to defend our rights, and we encourage ourselves that we can do it. Although the process is sort of exhaustive, we had to come several times. With good legal advice, they can do it as well,” commented Mauricio.

Oswaldo and Mauricio said they had several options to marry, such as the egalitarian cohabitation regime established in Mexico City, but they preferred to make their dream in the land where they were born.
