EDITORIAL: Trump’s administration takes direct aim at crucial climate and clean air protections

According to EDF, the advocacy partner of Environmental Defense Fund with a dedicated team of lobbyists, political strategists and communications professionals, that builds strong, bipartisan support for transformative environmental protections in the United States of America, the Trump’s administration is taking direct aim at the crucial climate and clean air protections that keep American families safe and healthy.

Last weekend, 200,000 Americans spent President Trump’s 100th day in office taking to the streets of Washington DC to counter the Trump Administration’s attacks on clean air and climate action.

It was hot, long, and exhausting. It was crowded. It was peaceful, and inspirational, and it was so many other things that I’ll never find the words to describe.

But more than anything, it was evidence. It was proof that Americans will not take clean air and water for granted.

But now that we’re done marching—what comes next? Action.

That’s why we’ve created a climate action toolkit just for this occasion—check it out to find out how we can continue to rise together, and fight back!

This administration’s attacks on our most crucial clean air and public health protections have been daunting—and countering them has honestly been exhausting.

Think all chemicals are tested? Think again. Early in January, a bundle of bills quietly passed the House of Representatives. Together, they are radical threats to public health that throw up unprecedented and dangerous roadblocks and delays to sensible safeguards that protect the American people. (Photo: EDF)

But just as a blossoming environmental awareness in the early 1970s led to some of the bedrock laws we rely on today, I believe the great awakening of 2017 will echo for years to come. If we work together and make our voices heard, we can limit the worst of the damage Trump intends to inflict. Here’s how:

  • Right now, the EPA is accepting comments that will influence how they address three of President Trump’s executive orders—each attacking our climate and clean air protections in their own way. We have these protections because Americans have the right to breathe clean air, to eat and drink food and water that we know are safe. And we have the right to speak out to protect our most crucial public health protections. Make sure the EPA hears from you, before it’s too late.
  • According to our sources, the Senate could soon bring to the floor legislation that would unravel crucial limits on the amount of dangerous climate pollution emitted by the oil & gas industry on our public and tribal lands. But when this legislation passed the House, a record 11 Republicans crossed party lines to stand up for the environment. With 4 out of 5 congressional offices saying a phone call from a constituent like you can influence a Senator’s vote, this is a fight we can win—with your help.
  • And President Trump’s proposed guts to the EPA’s budget are so outrageous that even members of his own party are speaking out against them. Taking a sledgehammer to the EPA just doesn’t make economic sense: Clean Air Act pollution limits implemented by the EPA provide $30 in health benefits for every $1 invested in compliance. By 2020, those same pollution limits will save 230,000 lives each year. And 2.7 million people work in clean energy nationwide. You can help save the EPA’s funding—find out how.

With our climate action toolkit, you can rise together and fight back against these attacks—and more. Because we’re not just taking to the streets—we’re taking action. And with your help, we will win.
