Fernando Olivera Rocha, Guanajuato’s Secretary of Tourism has estimated an investment of $972 million pesos ($48 million USD) in a large number of touristic projects in the city of León during 2017 and 2018, for a total investment of $2.5 billion pesos between 2013 and 2018.
Olivera Rocha pointed out that the Directorate of Culture Tourism has supported the sector through training courses offered to 1,483 service providers, certifying more than 224 tourism related companies.
The official informed: “During the last five years, the tourism sector in the city of León has been growing significantly, for an average increase of more than 6% a year. Just during 2012, 1.2 million travelers visited the city, and 4 years later, a total of 1.5 million tourists came to Leon in 2016”.
Olivera Rocha continued: “The number of hotel rooms has grown over 4% in 5 years, from 6,786 in 2012, to 8,033 in 2016, resulting in 1,274 new units. And we expect to increase the figure to more than 9,000 by the end of 2018”.
León lives an exponential growth due the great variety of attractions, events, festivals, expos, sports competitions, gastronomic fairs, convention centers and shopping malls. In this context, the official presented the State Tourism Strategy, “Challenges and Opportunities for Leon” (Retos y Oportunidades para Leon), which highlights specific projects that the agency has proposed to work in collaboration with the municipal government.
The State Secretary informed that the proposal integrates public policies to promote the destination through the implementation of different festivals and events. “We want to promote the convention tourism market too, with the professionalization of our tourism service providers, and our new program called “”Intelligent Tourist Destination Plan”.
Recently, we’ve worked shoulder to shoulder with the World Tourism Organization to boost the shopping tourism in León, as well as the promotion of touristic routes and circuits, Magic Towns and Heritage Cities.
