U.S. remittances to Guanajuato register new record levels

Thousands of Guanajuato families depend directly on remittances sent by their relatives who work in the United States, reported Televisa Noticias.

Iliana Rodríguez, wife of a Mexican immigrant, literally stated that if her husband does not send money, she and her family would not have anything to eat.

More than six thousand rural communities in the state of Guanajuato use money from remittances for education, food, construction and housing.

According to data from the Bank of Mexico, our country received more than $ 2.20 million USD only during the month March 2017, from immigrants living in the U.S.A, representing the largest monthly amount in more than eight years, 15.1 percent over in the same period in 2016.

Diego Sinhoe, State’s Secretary of Social Development, declared: “we have registered an increase in terms of the number of remittances, a total of $550 million dollars have been received by hundreds of Guanajuato residents in the first four months of the year.

“In fact, a total of 6.6 billion USD were registered from January to April 2017, representing 7% more compared with the same period last year”, reported the Bank of Mexico.

Due to the new immigration policies carried out by the U.S. President Donald Trump, Guanajuato families that depend on remittances, are really concerned and afraid in relation to what could happen in the next days.

Guanajuato received 2.4 billion USD in 2016 and a total of 26.97 billion USD entered the national territory that year, which represents the highest figure in remittances since 2008.
