Members of the LGBTQ + community came to the government palace and made a symbolic closure of its doors, in rejection to the government’s refusal to modify the Civil Code and recognize their rights as individuals.
Just outside the palace gates, activists placed a symbolic yellow tape with the word “Closure” (clausurado) and the colors of the gay flag.
Demonstrators demand the reform of articles that define civil marriage as the union between a man and a woman, a legal framework already declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Activits also claim for their right to modify their birth certificate according to their sexual identity.
Another demand was to supply contraceptives, methods of prevention and information on sexually transmitted diseases to hospitals and health centers in the state of Guanajuato.
The president of the civil association Círculo de la Diversidad, Raúl Valtierra, said that, in cases which members of the gay community go to Mexico City for a change of identity, their new documents are rejected in Guanajuato, as they are not considered valid.
“Professionals and people with a college degree, are rejected when applying for a job, because their act does not match with their “physical appearance” (according to employers),” he said.
They also demanded the intervention of the “Council to Prevent and Eradicate Discrimination” (Consejo para prevenir y erradicar la discriminación) because, as members of the Gay Community in Guanajuato pointed out, this council is totally useless and works only as “an ornament”.
