Guanajuato International Film Festival kicks off in San Miguel

Wth the “Jardín” of San Miguel de Allende as stage, and at the foot of the majestic parish of San Miguel Arcángel, mayor Fernando Olivera Rocha publicly recognized the work of Sarah Hoch, executive director of the Guanajuato International Film Festival: GIFF, during the last 20 years. Period of time in which she has been able to position the GIFF as one of the most important film festivals in the country.

 

– A tribute was paid to Mexican actress Isela Vega for her long and successfull acting career. She was granted the ‘Heart of Silver’, maximum distinction of the Guanajuato International Film Festival: GIFF.

– The opening film of the GIFF was “Powder and Glory“, “explosive” documentary by Viktor Jakovleski.

The documentary  “Brimstone and glory”, directed by the German filmmaker Viktor Jakovleski, is based on the tradition of the manufacture, use and sale of fireworks and homemade pyrotechnics in the municipality of Tultepec, Estado de México, where a huge explosion rocked a pyrotechnics market killing over two dozen people and injuring at least 70 others on December 2016.

– As part of the inauguration ceremony, the presentation of the book “Se sufre, pero se aprende“(You suffer but you learn),  by Spanish author, Francisco Javier Millán took place at the “Jardín” also.  This literary work analyzes critically Mexican silver screen icon Pedro Infante.

– Finally, the Secretary of Health of the State of Guanajuato, joined the GIFF with a mental health campaign, featuring the hashtag ‘#YoMeComprometo‘ (I commit myself).

Ana Serradilla is the spokesperson for this campaign to prevent suicidal behavior, entitled #YoMeComprometo, organized by the State Ministry of Health and with the participation of the Guanajuato International Film Festival.
