May peace prevail on Earth. What a concept!
And, it’s one that approximately 200,000 communities in 194 countries have embraced by the symbolic construction of a peace pole, a tall, four-sided reminded that we may all think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony.
Thanks to the efforts of Camino de la Paz, the Rotary Club, and numerous other local nonprofits and individuals, a beautiful pink cantera peace pole will reside in Parque Juarez soon, and the public is invited to its groundbreaking Thursday, July 13, at 10 a.m.
“A peace pole symbolizes the oneness of humanity, our wish for a world at peace. It brings people together to inspire, awaken and uplift the human consciousness. It stands as a silent vigil for peace to prevail on earth. The peace pole will serve as a constant reminder for us to visualize and pray for world peace,” said peace pole organizer Tom Schneider, who is a Rotarian and a cofounder of Camino de la Paz.
The three-meter-tall peace pole will display the message May Peace Prevail on Earth in English, Spanish, Otomi, Nahuatl, Braille, and Mexican Sign Language. It will also have a Rotary message of peace through service in both English and Spanish. It will be located between the basketball courts and the flagpole. The dedication is planned for the first week in August.
The first peace pole was placed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in 1955, 10 years after the world’s first nuclear devices were used. Peace poles frequently are placed in community parks and near the entrances of schools. The Peace Pole Project is promoted by The World Peace Prayer Society at www.peacepoleproject.org, where their slogan is Planting the Universal Message of Peace.
