White House confirms Trump, Peña and Putin meeting in G20 summit

US President Donald Trump will meet with his counterparts from Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, at the G20 summit next week in Hamburg, Germany, announced today the White House.

The White House’s national security adviser, General H.R. McMaster, informed about the meetings during a press conference to give details of the presidential European tour.

Trump will leave for Poland on Wednesday, the first stage of the trip, and then attend the summit of G20 leaders in Hamburg.

As for Trump’s meeting with Peña Nieto on the context of the G20, it will be the first encounter between them after the Mexican president canceled a visit to the White House earlier this year because of tensions over the border wall.

Since then, they have exchanged a few bilateral calls, mainly on the issue of the wall and the discussion on the NAFTA renegotiation, which is expected to begin in August.

About the meeting with Putin, McMaster said that Trump has made it clear that he is seeking a “more constructive” relationship with Russia, but has also told his allies in Europe that he “will do what is necessary” to confront Moskow’s “destabilizing behavior.”
