Illegal logging denounced by ejidatarios in Vergel de la Sierra

A group of ejidatarios of the municipality of Ocampo, Guanajuato denounced the felling of trees that is being carried out for the commercialization of coal in Vergel de la Sierra.

The same ejidatarios also affirm that these lands are legally disputed by several people.

They point out that last Monday November 6, the representatives of the ejidatarios went to El Terrero, where 200 hectares of trees have been cut for the production of coal.

“The person responsible for the logging showed us a permit allegedly issued by Semarnat, which grants him authorization to cut down our trees until the year 2028.”

The person responsible for the logging showed documentation allegedly issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), which allows him to exploit the natural resources until the year 2028.

But one of the ejidatarios stated that according to the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) there are currently no permits to carry out this type of activity that harms the environment, much less in protected areas such as Vergel de la Sierra.

The ejidatarios expressed their disagreement since many of them have more than 15 years requesting possession of the land, however, no deeds have been granted to anyone of them, and all of the sudden, this outsider flashes these documents that enable him to basically carry out an environmental ecocide that will result in total devastation. Besides this protected area is one of the most important “lungs” in the state of Guanajuato.
