NYC terror attack: This is what is known about the truck attack in Manhattan

At least eight people were killed and 12 injured after a man drove a rented pickup truck onto a busy bicycle path leading to the 9/11 memorial in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday. Here is what we know:

What happened?

A few minutes after 3 p.m. ET Tuesday, just a few hours before the city’s Halloween festivities, a male driver careened a rented pickup onto a pedestrian walkway and bike path north of the World Trade Center memorial in Lower Manhattan and then sped south, running over pedestrians and bikers, the New York Police Department said.

After plowing almost a mile down the path, the driver collided with a school bus near Stuyvesant High School, then the suspect exited the vehicle holding two fake firearms, police said. At that point, an arriving officer, Ryan Nash, shot and struck the suspect in the abdomen. Nash, 28, a five-year veteran of the force, was later hailed as a “hero.”
