As part of the Day of the Dead celebrations, members of the international film production “Coco” toured the city of Guanajuato, which inspired part of the set design for this succesful movie produced by Pixar and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
Coco is an American film, which is inspired by the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, with scenographies inspired by cities such as Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.
On Friday November 3, a group of visitors toured the streets of Guanajuato, with Pixar credentials, and as parto of the “Coco” promotion, the crew entered the Hotel Posada Santa Fe Restaurant, where they received an explanation about a painting on one of the walls of this building.
The visitors toured the outside of the Municipal Presidency, walked through the Jardín de la Unión and had lunch at the aforementioned restaurant.
Although they did not want to give interviews to the local media, unofficially it was informed that a screenwriter came to Guanajuato, along with representatives of international media to promote the film outside the U.S.
The reason for touring the streets of Guanajuato, is the fact that this colonial city inspired some of the sets for the film released at the end of October in Mexican cinema theaters.
In order to achieve the visual content level necessary for this production, the animators of Pixar traveled and lived in Mexico for almost two years. During this time they visited cities such as Oaxaca, Michoacán, Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato.
According to local media, the statue of Jorge Negrete, placed in front of his house in Guanajuato’s Plaza del Ropero, could have served as inspiration for the statue of Ernesto de la Cruz on the film.
It is a fact that the streets of Guanajuato, inspired the creation of alleys for the film “Coco” a box office success in its premiere week at Mexican cinemas.
