100,000 people with diabetes in the state of Guanajuato: State Health Secretary

“With a rate of up to 10% per year, the number of people with diabetes in the state of Guanajuato continues to rise and now there are already 100,000 patients”, said the State Health Secretary, Daniel Alberto Díaz Martínez.

At the beginning of this administration, in 2012, the Ministry of Health attended to some 40,000 people detected with diabetes but despite the prevention campaigns, today the State Health system serves more than 100 thousand diabetics.

This figure does not include the patients of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) or the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE).

“We have a census of about 100 thousand patients with diabetes, this figure has grown exponentially and if you add to those with hypertension and diabetes, we’re talking of almost 200 thousand patients,” Díaz Martínez explained.

The head of state health department stated that another worrying aspect is the age, since previously it was rare to find patients with diabetes under 40 years old, but today it is common to see young people in their twenties with this disease.

Daniel Alberto Díaz Martínez recalled that sometimes the problem is not the disease itself, but all the complications it brings, such as blindness due to retinopathy, renal failure, diabetic foot, amputations, heart attacks and other consequences.

The State Health Secretary indicated that there is a lack of awareness among the population, because the best thing to do is to prevent and for that you have to change your diet and increase your physical activity, since most of the Mexican population, in addition to the risk factors for the type of life they lead, there is also a genetic predisposition to acquire this condition and other related diseases.
