During the works of extraction of quarry in the hills above the “Presa de la Olla” (in the state capital) some kind of marked footprints were found in the rocks, which according to studies by researchers from the University of Guanajuato ( UG) are from a thousand-year-old bird.
When workers realized that some of the rocks had unusual marks, they contacted the Department of Engineering in Mining, Metallurgy and Geology of the University of Guanajuato (UG), so the rocks could be examined.
The discovery was documented by a group of researchers, led by Dr. Raúl Miranda Avilés, a UG professor from the Department of Mining Engineering.
“No traces of this type and size had been found before in this area, the rock is a green sandstone known as the ‘Losero formation’, it is 32 million years old, which corresponds to the Oligocene period. We found 25 tracks in different tiles, ” the expert said.
He mentioned that this discovery was presented at the Congress of the Mexican Geophysical Union.
When analyzing the rocks and footprints, Miranda explained that the sedimentary environment of the rock was fluvial and of very low energy.
“We imagine a flooded plain where these birds lived, which, according to the tracks, we could be talking about some kind of very large and heavy crane, maybe over 5 feet tall,” he concluded.
