At least 35,000 people to participate in Atotonilco-SMA pilgrimage

Thousands of Catholics from the states of San Luis Potosí, Jalisco, Querétaro, Tlaxcala and Guanajuato are participating in the pilgrimage of Our Lord of the Column (Nuestro Señor de la Columna) in the community of Atotonilco, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato on March 19.

The Lord of the Column pilgrimage dates from 1823 when a plague epidemic threatened the population of San Miguel de Allende and the inhabitants of nearby communities prayed to their Lord Jesuschrist for help.

The members of the brotherhood of the Lord of the Column, cover the relic with a mantle so that it can leave its niche, in the Sanctuary of Jesus of Nazareth.

Among songs and prayers, the pilgrims travel by night the 12 kilometers that divide Atotonilco from San Miguel de Allende. Every year approximately  35,000 pilgrims participate in this procession.

After its journey, the image of the Lord of the Column, which represents the flagellated Christ, is deposited in the Parish of San Juan de Dios, where it remains until Good Friday, the day that the same statue is used in the “Stations of the Cross” procession.
