Guanajuato.- The head of the Partido Verde Ecologista de México, Carlos Ortiz Montaño, informed that the modifications to the Municipal Regulation for the Protection of Animals were implemented since last year, but the procedure has not been concluded yet.
“The municipal governments in Guanajuato have been working on the issue with the Health Directorate, the Legislative Affairs Committee, as well as with associations since July 2017, and they have made some very valuable contributions on the subject”, Ortiz Montaño said.

He also noted that until February the Animal Control Center (CECA) had 190 dogs in its facility, of which 79 were rescued through citizen reports and the other 111 canines were picked up in the streets by CECA staff. The official said that only 16 adoptions took place during February.
Ortiz Montaño added that the number of slaughtered dogs is still high, since approximately 105 dogs had to be sacrified. He stressed that it is very important to raise awareness among the citizenship in relation to purchasing, adopting and abandoning pets.
“The lack of awareness is our biggest problem, however the direction has increased the number of donations, they have a page where they upload pictures of the animals in order to promote adoptions, but in the end it is still a very low number”, Carlos Ortiz Montaño said.
