Conalep students develop plan to eradicte water lily from Yuriria Lagoon

A total of 950 hectares of the Yuriria Lagoon are infested with water lily, according to the Institute of Ecology of the State of Guanajuato, headed by Juan Ángel Mejía Gómez.

As part of the measures planned by the Institute, authorities are taking into account academic projects that consider water lily as raw material to replace wood, which will also contribute to the damage caused by the felling of trees.

The idea belongs to the students of Conalep Valle de Santiago, Guadalupe Hernández, Javier Morales and Raúl Carrera, whose project was presented last year in the event known as Swift.

The students, with support from their teachers have gathered information that shows that between 40 and 50% of the lagoon, which has an area of 80 square kilometers, is contaminated with the invasive water lily.

According to the research made by the Industrial Chemistry students, approximately 10,000 families live from fishing in the lagoon. So therefore, the three main added values that stand out from their proposal is that water lily is a product that burns longer than wood, it does not generate plague and its lifetime is greater than that of wood.

The University of Guanajuato, whose rector is Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, has also expressed that they have a project to remove this plague from the Yuriria Lagoon.

The Yuriria Lagoon is located 90 miles south of San Miguel de Allende (Google)
